Operation Dark Heart rises from ashes

So the burned book has returned. The redacted version is now available, even from Amazon. Wikileaks warns they have an unredacted copy from the first printing. These have sold for as much as $2000 on eBay. Julian Assange has promised to publish the unredacted version on wikileaks.org. I checked and they claim "scheduled maintenance" is underway.
AFP claims Assange is being hunted by Australian spies. Australia is after all the home of the old Nugan-Hand bank (until 1980 - but intrigues continue), infamous for CIA money laundering by some of the spookiest creatures in the business. Nonetheless, Julian continues making public appearances - most recently at London's City University. Sometimes the light of day is a lifesaver. This may be such an instance. Reports from City University London by mainstream media were dull, including stale slander of Assange. Here are 3 refreshing reports of Thursday's event:

Operation Dark Heart will soon see the light of day

St. Martin's Press is currently negotiating with the Pentagon for the sale of it's entire first printing of "Operation Dark Heart" by Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer, formerly of US intelligence in South Asia. At this point, it seems the military has no way to stop publication of the book that promises to blow holes in the public image of US operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. After the first run of 10,000 copies is gone, the usual thing for a publisher to do is print more.

Having not yet seen the light of day, the book is already headed on it's way up the charts.According to The Guardian:

"Shaffer describes in the book how he was part of the "dark side of the force" that operates outside the usual constraints of the military system...
...He says that US forces were gaining the upper hand until the military brass involved itself, curbing operations in Pakistan and permitting the Taliban to strengthen again.

Shaffer, who used the pseudonym Christopher Stryker, fell foul of his superiors several years ago after claiming that an intelligence programme he was working with identified Mohammed Atta as a terrorist threat to the US before he led the attacks on 9/11."
Similar claims are made by various intelligence agents who were dismissed or silenced in July and August of 2001, including Sibel Edmonds, a translator for the FBI who continues to struggle to make her story known.

St. Martins Press will release "Operation Dark Heart" next week. How soon it will reach the shelves is still an open question.

Same old military dictatorship in Peru

Reagan Era strongman Alan Garcia has recently decreed that Peru will apply the statute of limitations to crimes against humanity - some of which are known to have been committed during his presidency in the 80s. According to José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. "This means that those responsible for killings, ‘disappearances,' and torture will never have to pay the price for their crimes..."

"...This provision would allow Peruvian courts to apply statutes of limitations to cases of grave human rights abuses committed in the 1980s and 1990s, which are currently under investigation. These include atrocities during Garcia's first term, from 1985 to 1990, such as the massacre of 122 prisoners in El Fronton in 1986."

Domestic Surveillance by the DOD

Minutes ago, I had just successfully countered a hack attempt against my home computer by a system in France (88.191.28.59), combined with a mysterious IP address from Sprint in Virginia (205.245.110.154). Immediately after I filed a protest with Sprint, a similar IP address took up the attack. I tracked it to "Space and Warfare Command"

Iraq Study Group Members Profit from Secret UK Defense Lab

George Tenet, Frank Carlucci, and James Baker benefit from the privatization of sensitive UK defense assets finalized shortly before 9/11. On July 1, 2001, a portion of the British "Defence Evaluation and Research Agency" was renamed QuinetiQ. Former DCI George Tenet is one of its' directors.

These same people will profit from the privatization of Iraqi oil reserves:
which are 500x greater than Iraq's annual production in 1999. Which is why the Iraq Study Group, led by James Baker of Carlyle has recommended privatization.see also

The privatization of QuinetiQ, former the research arm of the UK "Ministry of Defence" was proposed in 1998, shortly after Tenet assumed the postion of DCI in the US.

The story is based on publicly avalable government documents which are included in the "work in progress" currently online.

Full Text of Ahmadinejad's Letter to Bush

In his lengthy letter to President Bush, Iran's President Ahmadinejad addresses concerns about 911, US support of Saddam Hussein, and the US overthrow of a legally elected Iranian government in 1953. Not surprisingly, it was universally shunned by the media that is now controlled by the same people who have looted the US treasury to the tune of US$7000 Billion - that is, US$7 Trillion worth of Fear and Loathing.
"Mr President, September Eleven was a horrendous incident. The killing of innocents is deplorable and appalling in any part of the world. Our government immediately declared its disgust with the perpetrators and offered its condolences to the bereaved and expressed its sympathies...
September eleven was not a simple operation.
Could it have been planned and executed without coordination with intelligence and security services ? or their extensive infiltration?
...Why have the various aspects of the attacks been kept secret? Why are we not told who botched their responsibilities? And, why aren't those responsible and the guilty parties identified and put on trial? "
The complete text follows with links and comments. I have loosened my restrictions on comments, and yours are welcome - if you bother to reader the friggin' letter first.

Shit Hits the Fan in Iran

They could hear the sound of it spattering all the way in Norway, where the former Norwegian Prime Minister has called for a stay of execution for the opposition leader about to be hanged in Tehran. Those Norwegians know how to wake up at 5 in the morning, pray to their God, and read the newswire and the wire yesterday morning was more terrifying than usual. For Iran especially, where those folks are really between a rock and a hard place: Rumsfeld wants to attack them with our latest nuclear products from the University of California, and their own newly elected leader wants to hang people who have "insulted the government".

If they start executing people here for insulting Rumsfeld, let's hope the Norwegians we be around to bail us out -

6.11.05

REPORT ON THE GUATEMALA REVIEW
"On March 30, 1995, the President directed the Intelligence Oversight Board (IOB) to conduct a government-wide review concerning allegations regarding the l990 death of US citizen Michael DeVine, the 1992 disappearance of Guatemalan guerrilla leader Efrain Bamaca Velasquez, and related matters. Under terms of reference issued on April 7, 1995, the scope of this inquiry covers any existing intelligence bearing on the torture, disappearance, or death of US citizens in Guatemala since 1984, including the cases of Dianna Ortiz, Griffith Davis and Nicholas Blake. Other cases that have come to our attention and have been included in our review are those involving Peter Wolfe, Janey Skinner, Jennifer Roitman, Meredith Larson, June Weinstock, and Daniel Callahan. Because an investigation of the Dianna Ortiz case by the Department of Justice is still underway, our comments on that case will be limited at this time to our review of relevant intelligence reports."
A complete archive of this report is online: http://www.ciponline.org/iob.htm
"...In the course of our review, we found that several CIA assets were credibly alleged to have ordered, planned, or participated in serious human rights violations such as assassination, extrajudicial execution, torture, or kidnapping while they were assets--and that the CIA's Directorate of Operations (DO) headquarters was aware at the time of the allegations. A number of assets were alleged-- with varying levels of credibility--to have been involved in similar abuses before their CIA asset relationships began; in several other cases, the alleged abuses occurred or came to light only after the CIA was no longer in contact with the assets. A few assets were reportedly present as others engaged in acts of intimidation, and another engaged in such an act before becoming an asset. A further asset was the subject of an unspecific allegation of human rights abuse. Several of the above assets were also involved in covering up human rights abuses, as was an additional asset."
George Washington University has photocopies of the entire document from June 28, 1996 online:

In spite of this reality we have academics like Abraham Lowenthal who will insist that things were looking up as a result of the "progress" made during the Reagan years.
If he wasn't a professor of political science at UCLA his fantasies would be less troublesome, yet his title gets him recognized as an authority by New Perspectives Quarterly.

For Those Who Think That History Repeats Itself

"I went into the forest and told the people to hide their weapons. I wanted to continue resistance, and thus I became a rebel against Hitler's Germany.
At that time only England and I were still in the war.
I proclaimed that my army would be a Yugoslav Army. Some of my subalterns wished to have only a Serbian Army, but I proved to them the greatness of Yugoslavia as an idea.
Other commanders would not accept this.

Partisans appeared immediately when Soviet Russia entered the war. The Germans began to take reprisals, and some of the people begged me not to emerge."

Two hours ago I met Dahr Jamail: the news from Iraq wasn't pretty. It will be more difficult for a reporter to go in and get the type of coverage he got in January of this year. In June he was asked to testify for the International Tribunal on Iraq. He read from his testimony and indicated that the horrors he saw were only the tip of the iceberg. I will be posting a few photos of the event shortly in DOGSPOT

Role of Pakistan Central to Current Conflicts in the Former British Empire

The nuclear capability in Iran was aquired from Pakistan, and likewise were the leadership and intelligence resources of the Taliban. Half a decade ago, experts were seriously adressing this problem which then seemed to focus on the nuclear saber-rattling between India and Pakistan.

In the picture above, George W. Bush smiles while dismantling decades of work diffusing what had become Churchill's nightmare: an ungovernable empire of unmanageable wealth that could explode violently at any moment.

Peace Activist Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

In his politics a proponent of peace, and in his art a master of silence, Harold Pinter has received his just reward from the Swedish Academy with their announcement of the Nobel Prize in literature. It was Pinter's adaptation of "The French Lieutenant's Woman" in 1981 that helped launch the careers of Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. Pinter also began his career as an actor, and in the 50 years since has become one of the world's most widely respected playwrights, winning accolades from Tom Stoppard and Vaclav Havel. The occassion was true to form, by his own account: "I was called 20 minutes before the official announcement. The chair of the Nobel committee phoned and said, 'You have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature'. I remained silent, and then said, 'I'm speechless.'"

In a report from ABC news, Nobel permanent secretary Horace Engdahl added to the academy's explanation for Pinter's win, saying the playwright "restored theatre to its basic elements - an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretence crumbles". His style even saw the word 'Pinteresque' added to the artistic lexicon, meaning "a work of drama full of atmospheric silences peppered with half-stated insights".

Meanwhile, in Libya, home of many muslin extremists......

Khadaffi's generosity in supporting just about any sort of insurrection comes into play. from wikimirror.com we read:
Qaddafi also sought to increase Libyan influence, especially in states with an Islamic population, by calling for the creation of a Saharan Islamic state and supporting anti-government forces in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Notable in his politics has been the support for liberation movements, in most cases Muslim groups. In the 1970s and the 1980s this support was sometimes so freely given that even the most unsympathetic groups could get Libyan support. Often the groups represented ideologies far away from Qaddafi's own.
Question: Where did Qaddafi get his support?
How and why did it get funneled to groups he might have opposed?

Might it have been the Safari Club?

Court Ruling Allows Public to View Caskets of US Dead

It took a lawsuit to break the blockade of images of soldiers who come back from war in a casket. A suit filed late last year by Ralph Begleiter has prevailed in obtaining the release of...

...still photographs and video from Dover Air Force Base containing images of the memorial and arrival ceremonies for deceased military personnel arriving from overseas. The government apparently has withheld these records pursuant to a policy, first ordered in 1991 by then-Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney, through which the government halted the traditional American practice of honoring fallen soldiers when their flag-draped caskets return to United States soil.
